It was great to find this web site. I have been Pastor of Lower Burrell Baptist Church from it's start in 1983. Sharon and I have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. I can't believe how long it's been since Clarke College days.

This Web site is such a great idea. It is so sad to think of all those buildings with all their memories being torn down. We all still have our wonderful memories. My husband, Sam (didn't attend Clarke but visited me on Campus often), and I live in Columbus, MS. We are members of First Baptist where we work in the Youth Department. We have two children, Bryan and Lou Ann Laffoon live in Starkville, MS and have our precious granddaughter Riley Elizabeth, age 1. David and Tori Laffoon Alexander live in Tupelo, MS and work with Hispanics in North MS through this MS Baptist Convention Board. I would love to hear from anyone who graduated in 1965-1967 or any years around those.

Our family now lives in Jackson, TN and I was not aware there was a Clarke web site until I received the latest issue of Carey Capsules. Was saddened to learn that the buildings were torn down. And am wondering why? Would love to hear from any one attending from 1965 to 1967. I have been married to Tucker Martin from Mantee, MS for over 30 years and we have one son John Martin who lives in Birmingham, Ala. I am still teaching with the Jackson Madison County Schools. After 31 years in this profession, I am looking forward to retirement. Was wondering if any one had news of Sunanta and Supatra ( sisters from Thailand that attended Clarke while we were there). Also Vickie Awais from Jordan. Would enjoy hearing from anyone, but was just wondering about those 3 girls. Please write me at the email below.

Message: My Dad and I lived on campus in a little duplex from the summer of 1965 until his graduation in 1967. My Mother (Vera Mantile Sledge) attended Clarke in the late 30's early 40's. d.1964. Dad re-married while pastoring a little church outside Chunky, Ms.
We left Ms after Dad's graduation for Marshall, Tx. Loaded up a 1951 International pickup with plywood sides to hold our possessions. The Bill Savati family from Clarke via Rochester, NY helped us move. Their old Chevy was loaded down also, complete with 2 beehives tied to the roof. Dad was a student preacher (wasn't just about everyone?), pastored and attended ETBC (East Tx Baptist College or as we knew it - Eggs Toast and Bacon College.
Traveling nearly every Sunday as a student preacher was an experience like no other for both of us. I learned not every one in the South can fry chicken. But they will all try. To this day I can't eat chicken on Sunday.
Dad became Chaplain for the Missouri Disabled American Veterans chapter, pastored several SBC churches throughout Mo. He has published a fiction (?) novel "Mr. S. I. X." and has several manuscripts in the works. Now in Mt Vernon, Mo. he continues to counsel young and old alike on living and being alive through God's Grace.
While living at Clarke I recall riding my bicycle everywhere, building our own skateboards, mowing yards for a dollar or two all over town (sometimes our only cash flow), Dad being paid in fresh vegetables for preaching, prayer meetings, having a crush on Mary Jane Hill and a little red head named Freda. Watching the baseball and basketball games, prayer meetings. Dad working at Clarke for tuition and fixing me an egg sandwich with borrowed bread and eggs. Payer meetings. Watching Gunsmoke on Saturday nights.
Times were turbulent in Ms during the mid 60's. We were poor yet rich in love and fellowship. We learned. We wept. We rejoiced. Clarke was a rock for us.
During the 70's we set up a scholarship in my mother's name. Trouble was brewing for the college's future, our lives were being blessed. Sorrow and joy accompany the passing of Clarke. As we are taught in God's word we weep for a child to be born into a world full of sin and rejoice in the passing of our beloved who will reap their reward for eternity with the Lord.
Our memories ease the pain of Clarkes passing. We rejoice in the fact the struggle for Clarke to survive is over. Our efforts can be redirected and strengthened as we support other schools so young people can build their own memories and fight for the Lord as true Christian Soldiers.
"Let us pray."

As of January 1, 2010, I have refocused my ministry. Instead of serving on pastoral staff I will work with retreats, pulpit supply, concerts, etc. I am currently booked for church retreats and pastoral retreats in Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Oregon and Tennessee in 2010. I am also scheduled for other speaking engagements in Florida, Mississippi, Oregon and Tennessee. I plan to enjoy a "Trip of Memories" in the Spring of 2010 as I return to Mississippi and the places where I was born and lived until the age of 20.
My book, Contemptus Mundi, will be released in the summer of 2010. My book, Living in the Freedom of the Laws, an in depth study of the Ten Commandments is scheduled for release in either late 2010 or early 2011.
Last pastorate was as Interim Pastor of St. Luke's Community Church in Jacksonville, Florida, May 1, 2008 until December 27, 2009.
I have lived in St. Augustine, Florida since 2000 when I semi-retired due to poor health. Was forced into semi-retirement in 2002 after being diagnosed with "bone death" and having major surgeries for joint replacements. Also 2 strokes from which I totally recovered! God is good!!
One 36-year old son, David Terrell, and four grandchildren, in Wasilla, Alaska.
God has blessed me to be able to travel, study and minister across the USA and UK. I hold a Doctor of Music from Ashwood Conservatory of Music, New York City and Ph.D. in Religion from Canterbury, in England. Returned to England in August of 2009 where I received an honorary Doctor of Humanities for my 24 years of work with people infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. While I was at Canterbury I also taught 2 Christian Ethics lectures and a class of doctoral ministerial students on expository preaching.
Published poet and essayist. Also recorded two CD's of live organ and piano performance.
Have worked as Minister of Music, Organist/Choirmaster, Youth Pastor, Pastor of Worship Arts, Pastor of Outreach Ministries, Associate Pastor,Interim Pastor, and/or concert organist since 1966.
My life has been filled with so many wonderful blessings for which I am most grateful.

I learned of this website from Nancy Gavin James, a friend and co-worker.
I am excited to see some sweet names from the past and refresh some wonderful memories. My Clarke roomate,Doris Crowley Breland, and I have stayed in touch through the years. I am now teaching first grade-looking forward to a retirement someday. Nelson and I were married 34 years, but are married no longer. We have 2 wonderful kids-Marci Leigh Crozier Ulmer who is now in Heaven. Her death was incredibly sad. She lived to be happily married 8 years and gifted us with a wonderful granddaughter-Karsyn Neely Ulmer-a sunbeam in our family. Our son Kevin is married with 2 equally beautiful and bright children-Cole(3) and Daleigh(2). He is a full time Firefighter and a part-time Minister to Young Adults in his church. He is married to April, who is a great mom and a Kindergarten teacher. Our son-in-law remarried to a great girl who brought to our family Emily(11)another granddaughter. The GRAND total is 4 now and I simply love being a "Marmy". God has been merciful to me and I am so blessed to have been a small part of such a great Jr. College.
My Clarke memories are of very caring faculty beautful music, good friends spiritual growth, and a love for missions. Who could ever forget the lighting of the star?? There are milestones and anchors in my heart from God leading me there and teaching me there.
My good friend Doris is now a widow. Donald died last year and she is retired and caring for her mom who lives with her in Griffin Ga. I plan to let her know about this website. She's been great friend since we were in the nursery at church together in Griffin, GA. Blessings to all.

It seems that Clarke was so long ago but as everyone else has said, all of the memories are warm. It was a time and place that will live on in our memories as nothing has before or since. I married Mickey Given (class of 1969) and we have two children, Ryan and Kelly. Ryan graduated from MSU and Kelly from Ole Miss. Mick and I still live on the family farm in Potts Camp where we are in the 'sod' business. I graduated from Ole Miss in Accounting and have worked most of my life in the furniture business, currently at Bench Craft in Blue Mountain, MS. We would love to hear from any of our classmates and receive updates.

What a wonderful site! Clarke College was a unique place that provided a Christian education and helped students make an easy transition to a higher education or to a career. Although the facility is gone, Clarke lives on in each of us. Because it was so small and provided a "family" atmosphere, we made life-long friends that are impossible to replace.
I am District Adm. for Medtronic USA. We have a 30-year-old son, Scott, an RN, who is married and has two daughters. I would love to hear from anyone from the classes of 1966-1969.
